Video: Antarctica – Why?

Blogger’s note

It’s a long road. I think I’m back in college as a freshman. This is my freshman project – a year long project that has helped me learn a lot. It is not a good as I hoped, but it’s about as good as I can do at this stage of my education.

There are some obvious problems – particularily in the audio. Right now, I don’t know how to fix the issues I see. But by the time I’ve finished entire project I should be able to make improvements – and I will.

Ooops! Invisible problems too!

I think I posted the blog before my site finished preparing my video; that caused problems. When I separated parts 1 and 2 I didn’t adjust the proper time length of the video. And it simply stopped – apparently for no reason.

So I added an end notice, adusted the time shown for the length of the video, and let the site complete processing before publishing the post. AND I tested it more carefully!

This is my legacy – my autobiography

I didn’t want to include any autobiographical material – but Janice, Megan, and the grandkids piled on. Annie (of course, as my eldest grandchild and a freshman in college now – she’s the one I really listen to!) agreed. I don’t know enough, and won’t be in Antarctica long enough, to produce any significant story on penguins, or seals, or albrotrosses. Travelogs are boring. Annie told me I’ve got to make it my story. This video is to be my legacy. So this is my start, part 1 of a 5 part video . . ..

I know it’s long – just over 8 minutes. Still, I think this is the story I want my daughter and grandkids to remember.

I’m hoping some of you are faced with the same problem – what is our legacy and how do we produce something lasting? Young or old, I’d love some guidance. So please comment.

  2. Barry the video is blank for the last half! I love the first part. You know I’m leaving quilts. Hope it’s enough.

    1. Hi Sandy – I think everything is fixed. Megan has suggested some changes that will take awhile so part 2 is one the way …

Yes, your quilts are an inspiration!!!! The one you gave me and Megan is the centerpiece of our living room – an everyday treasure!!!

Hi Barry, I too lost the video at 9min 20 seconds or so and it never came back on – JUST as you were emphasizing the Antarctic – Bummer and NO idea what happened being a techno idiot. Let me know when I can watch it ALL and comment. You do splendid work!

Doggone it!! This is great but I NEED part 2 – the quicker the better. Awful for you, isn’t it, to have folks pushing at you for more. Consider it the best of compliments.

    1. Doggone it Celia –

I’ve worked hard after getting your message below. I wanted to get everything right and then let you know how much I enjoyed hearing from you and how much it meant to me. And now you’ve setup a new challenge! But daughter Megan watched Part 2, (and part 3 – which is done and approved!) Megan said to make some changes to part 2. So I’ll start on her changes and let you know when they’re done as fast as I can.

But I will admit it’s a struggle learning something new .. so I ask for a bit of time!!!!!

      LOve, -b

  6. Barry,
What a thoughtful story you are sharing. I just love seeing you, your photography and most of all hearing your voice. I am grateful our paths first crossed in that remote village of Brasstown. Grateful that I have known Megan all her life. And grateful to have known you all these many years. Your legacy will live on and on with these stories through your beloved huffalumps and friends. waiting for Part 2 and Part 3. Thank you for sharing your stories.

Use a consistent format. 16:9 is best because it can fit on a wide screen without distortion. Eliminate those black lines at the top and bottom of the screen. As I’ve said before, the hardest part of making a video is getting good audio. Get the microphone close to the source, a lapel microphone works good in the situation where you are recording narration. Your clip has that sound of being recorded in a 55 gallon drum. Having a lapel microphone eliminates this problem. I also noticed that the audio channel was not consistent – sometimes only the left, sometimes only the right and sometimes both which is the ideal. Your editing software should be able to control the audio tracks.

Impressive autobiography! I did a written one. Wish I had thought of making it as a video. Why didn’t you tell me! I’ll think about this but the written one is done, I’m 79 . . . .

Don’t worry about impressing those kids. It is enough to inspire them and you’re your life story is inspirational!

Heffalump. Ah the memories. My father would read to me when I was very young and I remember the heffalumps and Thumper getting twitterpaited! Quit it Barry, the emotions are simply too much to endure!
